Unity is one of the premiere tools for game development; especially when working in small group or as a solo developer. Today, I will cover the absolute basics on how to get Unity installed on your machine and get it set up for your next project!

First off let’s head over to Unity’s home webpage.

https://unity.com/

Press the blue “Get Started” button at the top of the screen. Then, navigate to the “Student and Hobbyist tab” and grab either the “Student” or “Personal” License.

These Licenses should cover any school related or personal work, but check your license restrictions if you plan on publishing and charging money for your product!

Next, download for your Operating System (Usually Windows).

Let the installation Wizard to its magic and install it to your preferred location.

Once installation is complete, you can open up Unity Hub to see your current projects and the versions of the Unity Editor you have available to you.

From here you can make a new project with various parameters; 2D vs 3D, different Rendering Pipelines, etc.

Unity serves as a canvas to paint your creations into. It will do the heavy lifting if you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn how to operate it. Fortunately, the internet is flooded with fantastic tutorials on all things game design, including Unity!

Stay tuned here for a thorough breakdown of the ins and outs of Unity!
